Vienna, 20 August 2014
This year marks the centenary of the outbreak of World War One and the bicentenary of the opening of the
Congress of Vienna — two dates that profoundly shaped the course of history. While in 1814, towards the end
of the Napoleonic Wars, the concerted powers of Europe were architects of a new international system, the
leaders of 1914 have famously been described as sleepwalkers, stumbling into war. At a time of escalating
and complex challenges — from regional tensions in Ukraine, the Middle East and the South China Sea to
global threats like climate change, the financial crisis and growing inequality — what can leaders of today learn
from these historic events in order to enhance international peace and security?
To discuss these issues in an informal environment among a select group of leaders:
The International Peace Institute (IPI) and Salzburg Global Seminar
with the support of the Foreign Ministries of Canada and Norway
invite you to a one week seminar on
1814, 1914, 2014: Lessons from the Past, Visions for the Future
25-29 August 2014 at Schloss Leopoldskron in Salzburg, Austria
The format of the symposium is designed to combine expert keynote addresses with inter-active discussions
complemented by a stimulating social program. Participants include internationally recognized figures from the
worlds of politics, diplomacy, and the military, together with historians, journalists, political scientists,
philosophers, and writers. The timing of the meeting corresponds with the world famous Salzburg Festival.
The organizers will cover the costs of your transportation to and from Salzburg, as well as providing
accommodation and meals during the event at the historic Schloss Leopolskron.
We hope that you can join us for this event that will provide the leaders of today with a unique opportunity to
enable us, at a time of rapid change and complex challenges, to reflect on the lessons of the past to create a
better future. Kindly let us know if you'll be able to attend by sending an Email to Johanna Borstner
([email protected]).
