A colourful backgrounder in the Australian on 29 November 1996, the day after he became Premier of South
Australia, argued that there was a defining moment in Olsen's life when he was eighteen and with his father
when the latter suffered a massive heart attack and died while driving the family speedboat. Other defining
moments revolved around his fortunes as a state politician: his two years in the Senate rated barely a mention.
State politics was dearly the main game for John Olsen. - c_c>NAK.re.C.Tet, iO Aluter-bC4.1

Born In Kadina in rural South Australia on 7 June 1945, Olsen was the son of Stanley John Olsen, owner of an
agricultural•fftchine and motor vehicle business, and his wife Joyce Rosalind, nee Heath. He was educated at
MKadina Memorial High Schoo*tudied accountancy at the South Australian School of Business Studies, spent a
period from 1962 as a bank clerk with the SA Savings Bank, and by 1968 was managing director of the family
business, J. R. Olsen & Sons Pty Ltd. His determination to be part of the political process and influence policy
direction was inspired by what he saw as the need to addrem_the neglect of small business interests untler Don

*from 1974 tor
Ma71968 he married Julie Abbott they were to have two sons and a daughter.
4 In 1976 Olsen was elected president of the South Australian division of the Liberal PartAn office which he held
until 1979 when he was elected to ffie—South Australian House of-A-ssirgI
rny as the member for Rocky River,
following a boundary redistribution in 1985 he became the member for Custance. Olsen served as Chief
Secretary and Minister for Fisheries in the Tonkin Liberal Government from March 1982 until the ALP victory in
the state election in November of that year. David Tonkin resigned from Parliament, and Olsen defeated Dean
Brown in a ballot for leadership of the party. As Leader of the Opposition in the South Australian Parliament, he
contested and lost the 1985 and 1989 state elections against Labor Premier John Bannon. Following the defeat
of November 1989, in which his party obtained more than fifty per cent of the two-party preferred vote, Olsen
indicated that he would accept nomination for the Senate vacancy to be caused by the Impending resignation of
Senator Tony Messner. He resigned as Leader in January 1990, and resigned his seat in the House of
Assembly immediately before being chosen for the vacancy by a Joint sitting of the Houses of the SA Parliament Ac
on 7 May 1990; he was sworn in the Senate on the following day.[1]
$o Isen's first speech, delivered on 21 May 1990, called for increased unity for a 'fragmented and nervous nation'.
He criticised the regulatory duplication that characterised federal and state administration of health, education
and housing, and urged the restructuring of the economythrough privatisation and the deregulation of financial
and labour markets, to create an environment 'where freedom and incentive are the basics'.
He raised the issue of the maladministration of the Murray-Darling and the impact this was having on South
Australia:
... the heart of Australia is being left to die. Its main artery is clogged with the salinity and pollution of the
States through watch It passes, with my State of South Australia ... condemned by a political inertia to
being in effect the sewer of Australia.
And he addressed immigration issues, arguing that migrants should be encouraged to settle in places other than
the east coast, that they should be obliged to become citizens, and to take English language courses.[2]
An experienced parliamentarian, during his brief time in the Senate Olsen made 'articulate and forceful, and, at
times, emotionar contributions to debate. He spoke often on the state of the economy, particularly its effect on
small business and rural communities, and referring frequently to the situation in his home state.

In the first primary contest, the Iowa Caucus, Clinton finished a distant third to Iowa senator Tom
Harkin. During the campaign for the New Hampshire primary, reports surfaced that Clinton had
engaged in an extramarital affair with Gennifer Flowers. Clinton fell far behind former
Massachusetts senator Paul Tsongas in the New Hampshire polls.fal Folio •
Su
Bowl XXVI,
Clinton and his wife Hillary went on 6o Minutes to rebuff the charges .E Their television
appearance was a calculated risk, but Clinton regained several delegates. He finished second to
Tsongas in the New Hampshire primary, but after trailing badly in the polls and coming within
single digits of winning, the media viewed it as a victory. News outlets labeled him "The Comeback
Kid" for earning a firm second-place finishifr71
Winning the
prizes of Florida and Texas and many of the Southern primaries on Super
Tuesday gave Clinton a sizable delegate lead. However, former California governor Jerry Brown
was scoring. victories and Clinton had yet to win a significant contest outside his native
South.112A651 With no major Southern state remaining, Clinton targeted New York, which had
many delegates. He scored a resounding victory in New York City, shedding his image as a regional
candidate.0.51 Having been transformed into the consensus candidate, he secured the Democratic
Party nomination, finishing with a victory in Jerry Brown's home state of California.M
During the campaign, questions of conflict of interest regarding state
business and the politically powerful Rose Law Firm, at which Hillary
Rodham Clinton was a partner, arose. Clinton argued the questions
were moot because all transactions with the state had been deducted
before determining Hillary's firm pay.M1 Further concern arose when
Bill Clinton announced that, with Hillary, voters would be getting two
presidents "for the price of one". l
Clinton was still the governor of Arkansas while campaigning for U.S.
president, and he returned to his home state to see that Ricer Ray
Rector would be executed. After killing a police officer and a civilian,
lector shot himself in the head, leading to what his lawyers said was a
state where he could still talk but did not understand the idea of
death. According to both Arkansas state law and Federal law, a
seriously mentally impaired inmate cannot be executed. The courts
disagreed with the allegation of grave mental impairment and allowed
the execution. Clinton's return to Arkansas for the execution was
framed in an article for The New York Thies as a possible political move to counter "soft on crime"
accusations.041721
Bush's approval ratings were around 8o percent during the Gulf War, and he was described as
unbeatable. When Bush compromised with Democrats to try to lower Federal deficits, he reneged
on his promise not to liaise taxes, which hurt his approval rating. Clinton repeatedly condemned
Bush for making a promise he failed to keep.1§51 By election time, the economy was souring and
Bush saw his approval rating plummet to just slightly over 4o percentiMN Finally, conservatives
were previously united by anti-communism, but with the end of the Cold War, the party lacked a
uniting issue. When Pat Buchanan and Pat Robertson addressed Christian themes at the
Republican National Convention—with Bush criticizing Democrats for omitting God from their
platform—many moderates were alienated.[L21 Clinton then pointed to his moderate, "New
Democrat" record as governor of Arkansas, though some on the more liberal side of the party

In March 2005, a woman contacted Florida's Palm Beach Police
Department and alleged that her 14-year-old stepdaughter had been
taken to Epstein's mansion by an older girl. While there, she was
allegedly paid $300 (equivalent to $420 in 2021) to strip and maccage
Epstein. 191-1 She had allegedly undressed, but left the encounter
wearing her underwear.19
Palm Beach Police began a 13-month undercover investigation of
Epstein, including a search of his home.
x`94] During the
investigation, Palm Beach Police Chief Michael Reiter publicly
accused the Palm Beach County state prosecutor, Barry Krischer, of
being too lenient and called for help from the FBI.11
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) then became involved.
Subsequently, the police alleged that Epstein had paid several girls to
perform sexuakacts with him.IM Interviews with five alleged victims and 17 witnesses under oath,
a high-school transcript and other items found in Epstein's trash and home allegedly showed that
some of the girls involved were under 18, the youngest being 4, with many under 16.19-0-1 1 The
police search of Epstein's home found two hidden cameras and large numbers of photos of girls
throughout the house some of whom the police had interviewed in the course of their
investigation.(931 NMI.

documents record that a search of Epstein's residence by Palm Beach Police detective Joseph
Recarey in 2005 uncovered an incriminating Amazon receipt containing books on S&M. The books
he ordered are titled: SM ion A Realistic Introduction, SlaveCraft: Roadmaps for Erotic
Servitude — Principles, Skills and Tools and Training with Miss Abernathy: A Workbook for
Erotic Slaves and Their Owners.198]
A former employee told the police that Epstein would receive massages three times a day.(931
Eventually the FBI compiled reports on "34 confirmed minors" eligible for restitution (increased to

included allegations that 12-year-old triplets were flown in from France for Epstein's birthday, and
flown back the following day after being sexually abused by the financier. It was alleged that young
girls were recruited from Brazil and other South American countries, former Soviet countries, and
Europe, and that Jean-Luc Brunel's "MC2" modeling agency was also supplying girls to

In May 2006, Palm Beach police filed a probable cause affidavit saying that Epstein should be
charged with four counts of unlawful sex with minors and one count of sexual abuse.

July 27, 2006, Epstein was arrested by the Palm Beach Police Department on state felony charges
of procuring a minor for prostitution and solicitation of a rostitute. He was booked at the Palm
