Yirah.fi — What Is This Site?

"Yirah" (יִרְאָה) is a Hebrew word that describes the fear of the Lord. This concept, however, runs far deeper than the kind of fear we experience in the face of danger. The fear of the Lord — "Yirah" — encompasses several dimensions:

  1. Reverence and holy fear — An awareness of God's greatness, holiness, and glory that stirs deep reverence within us
  2. Wonder and awe — In the presence of God and before His works, we experience a wonder that is a blend of fear and reverence
  3. Awareness — The understanding that we stand before God and that He sees all things
  4. Obedience — A desire to obey God because we love and revere Him

The Bible states repeatedly that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. In the Book of Proverbs (9:10), for example, it is written:
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding." (KJV)

This means that true wisdom begins with reverence for God and a right posture toward Him. When we acknowledge God's authority and holiness, we open our hearts to receive His wisdom and guidance.

The fear of the Lord is therefore not the same as anxious dread — it is rather a wise disposition that guides us onto the right path. It is the foundation upon which to build a life in this world. It helps us discern right from wrong and make decisions that are in harmony with God's will.
